Our own Leeroy Perkins, had an opportunity to meet with his idol, Anderson Cooper, at a Readerlink grand dinner in Chicago on August 31st.

J.A. Jance at Lewis Main Exchange-Joint Base Lewis McChord
J.A. Jance had a book signing for her book CLAWBACK, on March 19, 2016 at the Lewis Main Exchange-Joint Base Lewis McChord. Ms. Jance is a New York Times Bestselling author whom has written an impressive 53 books! Her first published book was released in 1985, Until Proven Guilty.
 
Ms. Jance  uses her initials  for her pen name because a publisher told her that disclosing her gender would be a liability for a book about a male detective.
 
Our customers and their families were excited to attend Ms. Jance's book signing at our Lewis Main Exchange as they have been fans of her series for many years! The best part of this event was seeing how her books are loved and enjoyed by different generations.

Bangor Cat in the Hat Event
The NEX Kitsap - Bangor "Meet the Cat in the Hat" event was a very big success.  We had a steady stream of kids from start to finish. 
 
The coloring and cookie decorating tables were a big hit, but the star of the day was once again The Cat in the Hat himself so expertly enacted by Robert Mcafee, our Warehouse Supervisor.  This is the fourth year Robert has played this character, as well as portraying The Grinch for us every November.

Book signing with Wounded Warrior SSG Travis Mills
In the evening of November 10th, Joint Base Lewis McChord welcomed Retired US Army SSG Travis Mills for a Book Signing at the Lewis Main Exchange. Travis was able to stop by the WTB at Madigan Hospital for an hour before heading to the store. He greeted about 60 soldiers there. Travis shared his story and how we looks back on it now. It was mentioned multiple times to not only take anything for granted but to enjoy each and every little bit you have been given, no matter the circumstances. Many soldiers asked questions about Travis’ recovery process and how he pushes through. Travis was presented with a plaque and coin to thank him for taking the time to stop by and for his service in the Military! 
 
Thousands have been wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 5 have survived quadruple amputee injuries. Travis Mills is as "Tough As They Come".
 
This is one soldier's inspiring story.

Book Signing with Best-selling Author Gus Lee at the Lewis Exchange
On Saturday, October 17th fans met with Best-selling Author of "With Schwarzkopf - Life Lessons of The Bear", Gus Lee at the Lewis Main Exchange.
 
Dick & Liz Cheney at Camp Pendleton on Saturday, Sept 12th
Dick & Liz Cheney were at Camp Pendleton, where they met and greeted fans. Everyone present enjoyed the event.
Book Signing with Seattle Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman
The Lewis Exchange welcomed Derrick Coleman for a Book Signing opportunity and a free Meet & Greet on June 26. Derrick plays for the Seattle Seahawks, as a fullback, and loves to show his appreciation to the troops and their families. He was honored to come to both the Lewis and McChord Exchanges to sign copies of his new book “No Excuses: a Memoir”. Over 350 excited fans came to the Lewis Exchange, and over 500 combined for both Exchanges. Derrick was willing to stay until the last fan got their book signed. Many hearing impaired children came to say hi to Derrick. Coleman took his time with each fan to express his gratefulness!! Coleman and a few other Seahawk players will be running their own little training camp at the Stadium Saturday 27 June! Derrick couldn’t wait to come back to the Exchange and meet his fans some more soon.
 
McChord MS had over 300 customers stand in line to get the book “No Excuses” autographed by Derrick Coleman on Friday, June 26.  Many brought other items such as footballs, banners and jerseys for Derrick to also sign.  He even personalized a few Derrick Coleman jerseys.   The first customers were in line at 1330pm.   Event was a huge success. 
 
As Derrick approached the table to start the signing, the crowd cheered, clapped and shouted the famous Seahawk chant. “Sea”  “Hawks”  over and over.  
 

Derrick Coleman, the first deaf offensive player in the NFL will be at the Lewis Mai Exchange signing his new book “No Excuses", on June 26th at 4PM.

 

He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Vikings in 2012. He played College football at the University of California (UCLA).

Excited fans met with Bryan Baeumler, HGTV host of "Leave it to Bryan" as he signed copies of his new book, "Measure Twice" at several Lowes locations in Ontario and Alberta these last few weeks.
 
There were women that ran from husbands just to give him a hug. Guys in the trades asked advice. Families with projects got tips. Kids looked up in awe. He was super nice to everyone that came by.

Book Signing Event - Clear Creek Exchange - Shawn Michaels
On March 24th, fans of Shawn Michaels lined up to meet and great Shawn Michaels, author of "Wrestling For My Life". The event was a huge success.
 
Here's what the Sales & Merchandise Manager had to say: "First of all , we would like to thank everyone for helping to make this event a huge success. Mr. Michaels was fantastic. He was truly appreciated by the Ft. Hood community. I cannot began to explain how he touched so many hearts and helped to lifted the spirits of our troops."

Annual Meet the "Cat In The Hat" Event - NEXCOM Kitsap
Navy Exchange Kitsap - Bangor held its second annual "Meet the Cat in the Ha"t Event on Saturday, 14 March.  They had a great turn out of children and parents and everyone had a great time.  We found some "Cat Hats" to give away to the kids at a local party store which made it more fun.

Book signing event with author of "Team Dog", Mike Ritland.

On February 27th, Lackland Troop Store North hosted a book signing event with author of "Team Dog", Mike Ritland. Customers and their dogs pre-registered for the free clinic/demonstration prior to the book signing event. They had a great turn out for the clinic and the book signing. Some of the working and "retired" dogs were also present. Iinca for example was the youngest participant. Iinca is a 7 week old Belgian Melinois in foster care until she is old enough to become a Military Working dog. Once she is turned back in she will attend puppy Tech School and that is where she will be evaluated for skills to join the working dog community.

JBSA Lackland Main Exchange hosted Nicholas Irving, author of NYT Bestseller, “The Reaper".
JBSA Lackland Main Exchange hosted Nicholas Irving, author of New York Times Bestseller, “The Reaper” autobiography of one of the Deadliest Special Ops Snipers on Thursday 26 February 2015. Customers lined up to meet Nick and share their gratitude and thanks for everything he has done to protect our freedom at home. The very humble sniper greeted each and every customer, young and old, retired, active duty, spouses as well as newly graduated basic airman and their families. Pictured below is a father, MSgt Engel, who was visiting his daughter who just graduated basic training here at JBSA Lackland AFB, Thursday the 26th Feb.  Engle presented Nick with a commanders coin from his unit to show gratitude for his Irving’s military career and 33 confirmed eliminations of enemy combats. A local now to the San Antonio area, Nick embraced the Lackland community as his own, making the meet and greet a special event for all involved.

Some folks are getting great author-signed books this holiday!
 
Joint Base Lewis McChord welcomed Phillip Margolin to the Lewis Exchange for a Book Signing on December 20th. The New York Times Best-Selling Author took time to talk to all who stopped by. Fans came to get his newest book “Women with a Gun” signed, along with his many other copies available.
 
Phillip told stories of his past experiences that lead him to write his new book. Phillip, also took time out of the conversation to make sure all the troops and their families who came by knew how much he appreciated them for what they do for our country! Fans were thrilled to see him back at JBLM and couldn’t wait until next visit.

Ann & Leslie Rule - Book Signing December 13th
The Lewis Exchange welcomed book author Ann Rule and Leslie Rule on December 13th for a Book Signing. Both Authors were able to talk with fans and get more stories for future books. More than 50 people came to get their books signed by the two authors. The daughter and mother combo made a great team as fans poured out their past personal stories and how they can relate to their books. Customers were thrilled Ann and Leslie were here at the store signing their books.

Jann Brett at Evergreen Elementary on Lewis McChord Joint Base
Evergreen Elementary School on Joint Base Lewis McChord- Fort Lewis welcomed the children’s book author Jan Brett for a Meet & Greet with a Book Signing on December 13th. Over 1,000 children and parents came out to the event to enjoy a small drawing presentation and interactive meet and greet.
 
The Lewis Exchange participated by bringing more than 30 titles of her beautifully illustrated books for troops and their families to purchase on location. Families were thrilled to hear they were able to purchase many different titles, besides her newly released book “The Animal’s Santa”.
 
Hedgie the Hedgehog came to visit with those waiting to get their books signed. Children were thrilled to see Jan Brett in person, and couldn’t wait for her next appearance to JBLM.

Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz and Senior Correspondent of The Washington Post, Rajiv Chandrasekaran authors of "For the Love of Country" - Book Signing

Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz and Senior Correspondent of The Washington Post, Rajiv Chandrasekaran were at the Lewis Exchange on Monday November 17th.

Fans waited for the opportunity to meet both authors of the newly released book “For the Love of Country: What our Veterans can teach us about Citizenship, Heroism, and Sacrifice”.

Rajiv And Howard continued to shine their knowledge of the many sacrifices all the men and women in uniform undertake every day to create a book honoring just those brave soldiers. Over 125 fans came out to get their book signed. Every 30 minutes both Howard and Rajiv were interviewed from multiple news groups around the Seattle/Tacoma area.

Both Howard and Rajiv expressed their joy of how many fans came out to get their books signed and how humbled they felt after the many true war stories were told. It made it one event to remember!!

Book Signing with Celebrity Chef - Mario Batali
Mario Batali, a co-host of "The Chew" was be at the Lewis Main Exchange on Sunday, November 2. He met and greeted many enthusiastic fans...
 
Fans of all ages came with his new book “America Farm to Table”. Many even brought previous books Mario has released to get signed. Fans of “The Chew” TV show couldn’t express their excitement enough to see the true Chef in person.
 
Over 200 enthusiastic fans came to see Mario in person! Mario continued to shine his smile to everyone who walked by. Pictures were taken, stories were told about visits to one of his many restaurants, and ‘crocks’ were exchanged. Mario was thrilled with the amount of fans he has on JBLM and was beyond humbled from the troops and their families.
 
Batali is "the definition of  Celebrity Chef" NY Times, 5X James Beard Award Winner, owner of two dozen restaurants including Babbo and Del Posto.

Book Signing with WWE Wrestler, Chris Jericho
Chris Jericho was at the McChord Field Exchange and at the Lewis Main Exchange on October 18th.
 
Chris Jericho is a best known for his work with WWE since 1999 and also known for his time in ECR and WCW. He has won 30 championships and has been accredited as being the first undisputed WWF Champion, having unified the WCW and WWF by defeating The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin on the same night in 2001. He is currently the only Grand Slam champion to have held every title in the WWE.
 
Fans of all ages brought his newest book “The Best at the World at What I have No Idea” to get signed, as well as past WWE memorabilia.
 
Familiar with the troops and what they go through on an everyday basis, Chris was able to share some of his stories from when he visited Afghanistan. He continues to share his past military related stories in his new book. Troops couldn’t express their excitement enough as he walked through the building. Chris was thrilled with the amount of fans he had come out.

Gary William was at the Navy Exchange Bangor to meet and greet with fans.

Over 100 people came to meet and greet Dr. Gates at the NEXCOM Bangor on August 5th. There were a few folks who arrived two hours early and quite a number of families with kids.  Dr. Gates personalized each book he signed.

Jase Robertson's Book Signing Event Pensacola, June 26th.

"Jase Robertson's Book Signing event was fantastic!!  Many Military Officers and Students came dressed to see Jase and he lit up when he saw them with his books.  He was very appreciative of each and every patron; thanking each one for their support and service.  An estimated 700 plus patrons went through the signing line!"

Bestselling Author, Mike Thaler @ Lewis Main Exchange to sign his Children's Book Series "Black Lagoon".

On Tuesday June 10th  Mike Thaler visited the Lewis Main Exchange to sign his children’s book series  “Black Lagoon”.

 He was greeted by parents and kids anxiously awaiting  their chance to get their books signed. Even though parents were here it was the kids that stole the show. They were talking with Mike and asking many different questions. Other kids were so excited that they were simply speechless.

Kevin O'Brien Bestselling Author of "Tell Me You're Sorry" @ Lewis Exchange
On June 7th the Lewis Main Exchange had a book signing event with New York Time & USA Today Bestselling Author Kevin O’Brien. O’Brien is a local author who writes gripping and fast paced thrillers. His newest book “Tell Me You’re Sorry” is also a spellbinding read.
 
Troops and their families were able to enjoy getting their book signed and learning more about why O’Brien writes the way he does. Questions were asked about upcoming books and customers showed extreme interest in his new novel. With O’Brien being a local author, his books reflect his experiences in Seattle and many customers appreciate and relate to that.

Meet & Greet with character Junie B. Jones at the Lewis Main Exchange
The Junie B event was a huge success! The feedback from the school staff was very good. They really enjoyed the show and were very appreciative. There were 257 kids present and several adults. 228 out of the 276 books that were sent in for the event were sold.
 
The Junie B. Jones Stupid Smelly Bus Tour! Meet & greet and book stamping with character was held on May 28th at the Lewis Main Exchange.

Kroger hosts a "Cat in the Hat" event at Calvary Day School in Savannah, GA
The Cat in the Hat spent a day at the Calvary Day School in Savannah to promote reading in the community. Kroger sponsored the event in conjunction with a new store opening in the area.

Author Signing - New York Times Bestselling Author, Max Brooks
On Tuesday April 15th, New York Times bestselling author Max Brooks visited the Lewis and McChord Exchanges and signed his book, “The Harlem Hell Fighters”.
 
The Harlem Hell fighters were the first African American  combat unit that served in World War I.  Max first heard about these extraordinary men at the age of 11 and wanted to tell the story of these unsung heroes.  Finally thirty years later  Max gives a voice to these brave men in this beautifully illustrated, well researched story.
 
During the meet and greet,  Max also signed his books World War Z  and Zombie Survival Guide. He answered questions and  posed for photos with everyone who came out to support him.
 
Among those that came out was a  Major that gave Max a coin from his unit in appreciation for his works. Max thanks JBLM for the opportunity to come and visit and looks forward to coming back again soon.

Author of "Heaven is for Real" - Book signing at the Lewis Exchange
#1 New York Times Bestselling Author - Todd Burpo, author of Heaven is for Real, a little boy's astounding story of his trip to heaven and back, was at the Lewis Exchange on Friday March 28th from 4-6PM.
 
Soon to be a major motion picture releasing in April this book and its author is certainly popular. Fans picked up copies of the book and mentioned how much they are looking forward to the movie coming out in April.

On December 2, another great book event was held at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The Grinch and Cindy Lou Who visited, and almost 300 excited children along with their parents, lined up to be greeted, hugged and read to.
 
AAFES Soft-line Supervisor, Monique Daniel, summarized the event: "Happy children lined up waiting to meet the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who. The line was out the door. Almost 300 customers came through the line to meet the Grinch. Over-joyed faces of children waited patiently for their turn to meet the Grinch! Cindy Lou Who read “How the Grinch Stole Christmas “ and many children were happy to discover the Grinch is nice in the end."
Book publishing representatives from Random House were thrilled. Book Signing with NYT Best Selling Author - JA Jance
On September 14th, the Lewis Main Exchange hosted a meet and greet with bestselling author J.A. Jance. She met fans and signed books from noon until 2pm.
 
J.A. Jance is the New York Times bestselling author of the Ali Reynolds series, the J.P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, and four interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family. Born in South Dakota and brought up in Bisbee, Arizona, Jance lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington and Tucson, Arizona. Her current novel “Second Watch” was released September 10, 2013 and continues to be sold at the exchange.

Big author signing at AAFES Fort Belvoir, VA.

A big author signing was held at AAFES Fort Belvoir, VA on June 22. Author of Argo: How the CIA and Hollywood Pulled Off the Most Audacious Rescue in History, Tony Mendez arrived early and was given a quick tour of the new facility. With over 250,000 sq. ft. it is the largest exchange in the US.

The signing started early around 12:15 and continued smoothly until a little after 3:00. Estimating 200+ books signed at the event and another 60 copies signed and stickered and displayed on a table for latecomers. One customer picked up 14 copies for her “team”.
